Llangrannog Rowing Club members won a number of awards on a recent rowing trip in Italy.

10 members from the club, joined by three from Towy Rowing Club, competed in the 50th Internationale Palio dei Galeoni on Lake Maggiore, Italy over August 13 and 14.

Two teams of women, one under-18, were entered into the Jole fixed seat boats race and the traditional Galleon race.

The junior team faced unique challenges as the only young crew in the competition.

They raced alongside experienced adult teams from Lewes (Sussex) and Purplecutter (Deptford) in their heat with no advantage given.

The girls, Esyllt Davies, Cate Fraser, Siwan Davies, Emily Fraser, and Cherry Folds, demonstrated impressive resolve on the 700-metre course, securing a substantial lead over their competitors.

This resulted in a gold medal win in the junior race and a silver medal in the women's race, an accomplishment not to be downplayed given their ages of 13-17.

The ladies team, consisting of Chris Fraser, Rhian Evans, Helen Evans, Justine Allison, and coxed by Dorian Davies, placed second in their Jole heat.

The team also won their heat of the Galleon Boat Race.

The ladies advanced to the galleon semi-finals, also supported by Nikki Nelson.

Notably, two of the participants raced consecutively to help neighbouring club Clwb Rhwyfo Sion Cwilt secure their place in the semis.

The Llangrannog ladies narrowly missed out on a galleon final place, which went to the Italian ladies.

Despite this, Fraser and Evans continued to assist their neighbouring team, helping secure a bronze medal in the finals.

The club's men's team was incomplete, causing Dorian Davies of Llangrannog to join forces with Sam Wilcox, Nicola Jayne Thomas, and Nikki Nelson from Towy Rowing Club, taking part in the men's Jole heat.

Davies and Wilcox later joined a Maltese crew, earning a silver medal despite losing to the Italian team but beat the Dutch team that had surpassed them in 2023.

Llangrannog Rowing Club's medal haul includes one gold, two silver, and one bronze, showcasing the resilience of its members.

The club thanked the Palio Remiero Pallanza Committee and European Fixed Seat for their hospitality.
