A New Quay teenager has won in the British Youth Sailing Regional Topper Class.

The sailor who brought home the victory is Steffan Williams.

On June 22 and June 23, the 15-year-old participated in the RYA Cymru event hosted by Dale Yacht Club and Celtic Sea Watersports in Dale, Pembrokeshire.

Steffan, the Welsh Topper Champion and a student at Ysgol Bro Teifi, has become a rising star in the UK Topper sailing dingy circuit.

Speaking about his recent triumph, Steffan said: "It was a fantastic competition and I want to thank the other sailors especially Thomas Venning, from Port Dinorwic Sailing Club in Y Felinheli, who came second with an excellent performance and gave me a tough challenge."

Acknowledging his support system, he extended gratitude to all the organisers, volunteers, RYA Cymru, and his Welsh squad coaches, Will Willet and Jonny Everett.

They, he said, played a crucial role in his progress in the past year.

Looking forward, Steffan is now focusing on the upcoming ITCA UK National Championship at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club in County Durham and the week-long ITCA National Topper Championship at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in August.

His ultimate goal is to transition into an ILCA Olympic class sailing dingy coming autumn.

Encouraging others to get into the sport, he ends his victory speech by saying: "Remember if you want to learn to sail in Ceredigon, come to Cardigan Bay Watersports in New Quay.

"It’s where I learnt to sail and had the best instructors and the most fun."
