Newcastle Emlyn ladies travelled to Whitchurch High School for their second encounter against their third team. After previously winning against the side before Christmas, Emlyn were seeking the same this time around.
The ladies started strong with the possession being equal between both teams. Whitchurch were testing the Emlyn’s midfield including Mel Williams, Efa Jones and Heledd-Mai Lloyd with the help of young sweeper Lois Davies, but were successful in distributing the ball to the attacking line.
Sioned Fflur held her own on the right wing, beating the defender and using her speed to get herself within the attacking circle, and this was reciprocated on the left channel by captain Sara Patterson. After gaining possession in the attacking circle, the ladies were awarded a short corner.
Ellie Lloyd injected the ball to Williams for a strike, but fell short as their goalkeeper managed to get there first. But Lloyd was quick to react as the rebound made sure that the ball was in the goal, 1-0 to Emlyn.
Thanks to Emlyn’s defenders - Sioned Davies, Lloyd, Caryl-Haf Lloyd and goalkeeper Elin Williams, they managed to keep the scoreline the same by saving and defending a few short corners.
After seeing a few changes to the home team’s setup, it took a bit of time for Emlyn to settle and play their game. Unfortunately during this time, the home team managed to equal Emlyn’s score to bring the scoreline to one a piece.
This wasn’t a stop to Emlyn’s scoring habits, following Sioned Fflur’s run down the right channel to find mum-Davies, who took a shot at goal. After a deflection from one of the defenders’ stick, the ball travelled nicely to Patterson to be placed in the goal.
Emlyn knew they had to defend strong in order to maintain the lead, but it wasn't enough against a determined Whitchurch side who managed to equalize once again to bring the scoreline to 2-2.
With 15 minutes left of the game, Patterson was awarded a green card due to a stick tackle, which left the team one player down. Junior players Izzy Stedman and Flo Plant held their own during this time as they attacked together and connected well with the Davies duo. The final score came to 2-2, which meant both teams were awarded a point each. Player of the match was awarded to Enfys Davies, but a special mention should be given to Lois Davies, Stedman and Plant as they all played amazingly in a very competitive game.
The ladies currently sit third in the Division 1 league behind Milford Haven and Bridgend with three games left to play. They’re on the road again on Saturday to play Penarth 3s for the third time this season.
