Newcastle Emlyn 1 Cardiff University Thirds 1
Newcastle Emlyn ladies’ first game of the second half of the season ended in a draw against Cardiff University Thirds at Crymych Leisure Centre.
It was a close game throughout, and 0-0 at half time, despite several shots on goal from the home side
The quick pace of the game meant Emlyn’s defence was tested throughout the first half, but Cardiff couldn’t capitalise with strong performances from sweeper Elen Hill and backs Sioned Davies (vice captain), Ellie Lloyd, Gwawr Evans and Caryl-Haf Lloyd.
Captain Sara Patterson’s rapid breaks down the left wing caused huge problems for the university side’s scrambled defence, supported by promising youngster Alaw Elisa and Amy Heighton.
Cardiff’s impressive goalkeeper held out until a few minutes in to the second half, but some lovely passing between from Enfys Davies eventually reached Heledd-Mai Lloyd in the striking circle who made it 1-0 to the home team with a powerful swing into the backboard.
After the reset, Cardiff Uni looked to strike back quickly. Taking Emlyn’s defence by surprise they managed to sneak a difficult push past Emlyn’s talented goalkeeper Elin Williams to draw equal.
In a tense second half, both teams failed to score the decider, despite some lovely breaks down the right wing from Sioned Davies, Rosie Hughes and Lois Davies.
Player of the match Mel Williams was as strong as ever in the centre, assisted by skilled newcomer Carys Owen who Emlyn will be pleased has decided to join the reds this season.
Coach Sarah Brazier will likely be happy with Emlyn’s performance in what was a high standard game against a quick university side.
Next weekend the team make the short trip to play Milford Haven ladies in what’s sure to be an exciting top of the table clash.
Thanks were expressed to The Hive, Aberaeron for kindly sponsoring the game.
