THERE is little doubt that on their day with the strongest line-up St Dogmaels are a match for anyone in junior football throughout the Mid Wales area as they showed by sweeping aside in form Maesglas 5-1 on their neighbours’ own Maes Radley stamping ground.

Having tasted victory in their previous four league and cup games the Blues must have fancied their chance of avenging last month’s 3-1 midweek defeat across the Teifi.

But in the event it was Saints, fresh from thrashing Bargod Rangers 12-2 in a cup tie, who took their chances although the final scoreline rather flattered the visitors.

Indeed, when the homesters drew level early in the second period they had a purple patch and could have netted two or three goals.

Maesglas will be hoping to bounce back this weekend when they make the short journey to lock horns with Cardigan Town while Saints visit Parc Puw for a head-to-head with Bargod Rangers.

Industrious midfielder Terry Woodgate, who is scoring goals for fun just now, led the Saints goal charts with a brilliant hat-trick and the other marksmen were substitute Tom Phillips and Ioan Owen. Striker Ashley Summers netted for Maesglas.

After going down 2-0 at Llandysul seven days earlier Cardigan Town returned for a League Cup preliminary round tie and deservedly emerged 2-1 winners.

The previous week Town midfielder Ben Davies was substituted but on this occasion he turned in a five-star performance as he pulled the strings and was hugely influential in his side’s victory.

Another to cover himself in glory was Michael Diggle who was given the task of shackling the league’s top marksman Simon Davies and did so to such an extent the home front-runner hardly had a sniff.

With veteran Justin Evans back in harness and five players aged under the age of 18 giving their all the Magpies were a competent outfit and could provide stiff opposition for neighbours Maesglas this weekend.

The visitors led by a solitary goal at the break after the experienced Evans chested down for young Jack Evans to volley home and another teenager Dan Nash got the second goal.

Also on the cup front New Quay sprang a 3-1 win over visitors Llanybydder with former St Dogmaels and Maesglas raider Johnny James the main man with a well-taken hat-trick.
