The Cardis have received rave reviews recently and they showed why with another quality showing in reaching round two of the Welsh Cup by lowering the colours of a more than useful outfit currently third in the Dragon Region Division A.

Cardigan hit the ground running and chalked up 14 points from two converted tries before the visitors had settled.

The first score came when winger Elys James gathered a Caerphilly kick ahead and fed outstanding skipper Luke Rogers who transferred to Alun Jenkins to race over wide out. The conversion by Rogers hit an upright and went over.

The home advantage was doubled after nine minutes when hooker Rhodri Parry-Jones took a strike against the head. Huw Williams fed centre Jack Horgan who side-stepped over under the posts and Rogers added the extras.

Caerphilly reduced the deficit with a penalty but Rogers cancelled it out with a successful kick and the Cardis, with Josh Roby and Tomos Powell towers of strength in the engine room, led 17-3 at the interval.

The visitors came right back into contention early in the second period with an unconverted try in the corner after which Cardigan were dealt a blow when Osian Rees was sent off for tackling a player who was off the ground.

With numerical advantage Caerphilly got to within two points of their opponents but Rogers kept them at bay with two further penalties before the visitors had the last word with another successful kick.

The visiting skipper was yellow-carded towards the end and displayed petulance in making a dissenting gesture to the home fans.
