AFTER a summer break of five months, the CSMBA short mat bowls league started a new season last week. Unfortunately, two teams had to postpone their games because they had too few players available to field a team.
The week started with Capel Dewi welcoming Dolphins. Capel Dewi certainly capitalised on their home advantage, with a solid 8 – 0 win to kick off their season. They are a strong team with some excellent players which, together with the home advantage, sealed the fate of the Dolphins.
Tuesday saw Llandygwydd travelling to Mydroilyn for their first game.
Jennifer Robins, Mydroilyn team captain said: “Overheard a comment from our opposition on the renewed Mydroilyn Hall floor: ' Bring back the bumps, at least we knew where to bowl.' Mydroilyn gained 2 more points on last year's result with the match drawn.”
On Thursday, Penrhiwllan took on Rhydlewis – a team that have always been at or very near the top of the league. Penrhiwllan did well to take 2 of the 8 points possible off them.
Llechryd won 6 – 2 at home to Orllwyn on Friday.
David Bailey reports: "It was a good start to the season for our "new look" team and new Team Captain Elaine. Our more experienced players all performed well, particularly Pauline Palmer who managed to get the one shot needed on the last end to win the singles 10-9 in a very skillful and close game.
"Both sides played some good bowls during a very pleasant evening. Well done to everyone, particularly to our two rookie players Rob and Alan who both played very well in their first competitive match. We can look forward to the rest of the season with confidence."
Playing short mat bowls is a great way to meet and socialise with people. All clubs in the CSMBA league are very friendly, and would welcome new members. There is a club that plays regularly on every day of the week; many with afternoon sessions as well as their league nights.
