AFTER an inauspicious start in Division Three West there was a welcome change of fortune for Cardigan with a 23-10 bonus point win at Pontyberem.
Whilst it can be said that the Gwendraeth Valley side could struggle in the months ahead nothing should be taken away from Llyr Griffiths and Co in opening their account and putting themselves in the right frame of mind to double up this Saturday when bottom of the pile Llanybydder come calling.
The visitors held a five-point advantage after the opening 40 minutes thanks to flankers Dylan Davies and Dylan Richards who crossed for tries. Outside half Iestyn Crompton weighed in with a spot on penalty kick.
Strong-running centre James Stephenson notched a try for Pontyberem converted by outside half Dan Griffiths.
The home fly half landed a penalty early in the second period to give his side hope but when it looked as if the Carmarthenshire side would wrest the initiative Cardigan produced a first-rate defensive display that repelled numerous raids.
Griffiths and colleagues wrapped up matters when effervescent scrum-half Tom Turner and loose head prop Ifan James went in for tries.
