A NEW season of school boy rugby got under way on Wednesday afternoon with the first round of fixtures being played between Ceredigion school senior teams. Following many changes over the summer Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn hosted Lampeter School, who also gave many players their first start for the senior XV. Lampeter dominated territory in the first half and were rewarded with some good scores, Emlyn did however dominate the scrum until and injury to a Lampeter prop meant they called for uncontested scrums which took away a major attacking weapon from the home side, a wasteful Emlyn did not make the most of Overlaps and miss matches in the back line and this was not helped by Centre Mark Ramsey and Fullback Oliver Butterworth going off injured in the first half. Lampeter did take their chances and despite a slight improvement and a penalty try in the second half Lampeter came a way with a impressive 7-47 victory. Elsewhere Aberaeron School hosted last years league winners Ysgol Dyfryn Tefi who fielded an entire backline of year 11 boys, who struggled when defending, Aberaeron centre James Morgan took full advantage scoring two early tries. Whilst Dyfryn Tefi matched the home side in the contact area and the set piece with captain Chris Price carrying well in the loose, the Aberaeron backline used their experience and finished the game off scoring a further two tries to seal a good opening day 24-0 win against the traditional power houses.

Next week will see Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn travel to Llandysul to play Ysgol Dyfryn Tefi in the big derby match which will take on extra importance following both teams opening day defeats.
