AFTER two postponements promoted Cardigan Town finally got into action and made up for lost time with a first-rate showing in springing a 4-2 win over previously unbeaten Lampeter Town at King George V Playing Field.

During a belated start the Magpies sounded a warning to their rivals that they are not in the top flight to make up the numbers.

Afterwards Town manager Seamus Doherty said “It was a brilliant performance by the lads who played some superb football. I was also impressed with Lampeter who contributed to a cracking game of football.”

Although it was essentially a fine all-round team performance that carried the day for Town special mention should be made of midfielders Kevin Morgan, Ben Davies and Adam Williams who were outstanding.

The Magpies went into the lead during the opening quarter when the classy Morgan crossed to ex-St Dogmaels star Adam Williams who powered a header past Heulyn Jones.

Soon afterwards Chris Morgan was unceremoniously upended by a Lampeter defender giving the homesters a penalty but John Lumb’s stab at the target from 12 yards was brilliantly saved by Jones.

Tricky winger Jason Jones squared matters midway through the half and Lampeter sneaked a second goal before the break through midfielder Gethin Edwards.

As Cardigan turned on the style after the interval John Lumb set up Ben Davies to tap home and bring the scores level.

Midfield dynamo Williams nudged Town ahead with a 25-yard screamer that beat Jones all ends up and the same player was denied a hat-trick when adjudged offside.

Ben Davies netted his second and Cardigan’s fourth goal to wrap up the points.

Newcastle Emlyn Reserves are the early leaders after a hat-trick of wins under new manager Stephen Hicks.

While nothing should be taken away from the Reds who won 4-3 win at St Dogmaels it has to be said that it was a lacklustre performance from Saints who gifted the visitors three of their goals, including the winner when Lee Evans put through his own goal.

The Teifi Estuary villagers trailed by two goals after the opening 20 minutes as the visitors netted through Gary Davies and Adrian Hazelby.

Front-runner Ioan Owen struck twice to put Saints back on level terms before the break and when Trevor Woodgate hit a third five minutes into the second period it appeared the homesters would bank all three points.

But Davies was presented with an easy chance to square matters and then that Evans own goal proved decisive.

Crannog bounced back from a 5-2 midweek defeat at St Dogmaels as the coastal villagers defeated visitors Llanybydder 7-0.

Rhydian Roberts led the way with a well-taken hat-trick – that’s six goals in three games for the striker - Eifion Jones bagged a brace and the other marksmen were Mike Glover and Jake Forbes.

After two defeats Maesglas hit the winning trail as they sank Aberporth 4-2 at Maes Radley. Ashley Summer netted twice and there were also goals for Daz Davies and Myles Harrison.

Champions New Quay dropped their first points of the term when held to a 3-3 draw by Llandysul at Parc Arthur. It could prove a tall order for the Seasiders to bounce back this weekend when they visit North Road to play Lampeter Town.

Saron make the running in the second division after a 3-2 win at Llanboidy in midweek and a 6-0 thrashing of visiting Felinfach on Saturday.
