Division Four (West) Cardigan 12 Ammanford 16 Cardigan came within a few minutes of gaining an excellent win over promotion candidates Ammanford as they were leading by 12-9 with 80 minutes on the clock but were rocked back as replacement centre Justin Lewis claimed a late try for Ammanford. Ace goal-kicker Craig Maloney converted and the Teifisiders were denied a morale-boosting victory, their only consolation being the fact that they outscored their opposition by two tries to one.
Maloney had put Ammanford ahead after 21 minutes with his first penalty but Cardigan lead 5-3 at the break as Steffan Williams grabbed a splendid score in the 30th minute as his pack combined well to set the platform and a clever break by Kevin Maddox saw the outside half release Steffan Williams on a 25-metre run to the line.
The Cardis started the second half well with a try from the kick off as No 8 Colin Davies fielded the ball and set off on a bullocking run where he scattered several would-be tacklers. Will Kerr and Jonathan Hickin were in support, as they were all afternoon, and quick ball allowed scrum half Phil Leighton to spread play wide and support well to score a fine try which full back Kevin Evans converted.
But two penalties from Maloney kept Ammanford in contention, despite some good ball-winning by Llyr Evans, Mark Hughes and skipper Richard Jones - and one missed tackle cost the Teifisiders so dearly in those fateful closing moments as Lewis became the Ammanford hero and Cardigan were left with the bitter taste of defeat.
