Ioan and Garan Croft are in the ‘shape of their lives’ for their professional boxing debut next month.
On December 7, the twin brothers who won gold and bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, will make their first step into the pro ranks.
Their debuts will take place at SETU Arena in Waterford, Ireland with Garan competing at super welterweight and Ioan campaigning at middleweight.
Ioan and Garan Croft said: “Both of us can’t wait. It’s been a long time coming for us and our friends and family. We’re looking forward to a good show. It’s important to get the win and look good doing it. We want to make a statement.
“It feels like we’ve been in camp for a long time. We have been sparring and training well. We are both in the shape of our lives.”
The Croft twins will turn 23 years old before their first professional contest, following successful amateur careers consisting of six major medals at Commonwealth and European level between them.
“Age doesn’t really mean anything in boxing. We are two of the most experienced amateurs in the country. We have 140 amateur fights each. If you’re not ready after 140 fights, you will never be ready. Age is just a number.”
Ioan and Garan’s decision to turn pro comes after they were omitted from the GB Boxing squad in February before a Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier in Italy.
The Croft twins spent two years with the GB Boxing squad in Sheffield.
Despite having seven fights before the omission, GB Boxing performance director Rob McCracken deemed Garan was not active enough.
Lewis Richardson was picked for the Olympics instead and won a bronze medal.
Cardigan ABC chairman Mike Lewis explained how the twin’s omission reminded him of Cardigan’s Chris Lawson losing his place to England’s Dave Odwell to compete at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Canada.
However, the twin's dream was already ruined when a change to the Olympic weight classes meant they would have to fight each other – something they said they would never do.
Ioan and Garan first began boxing at the age of 8 years old at Cardigan ABC and were coached by their dad, former heavyweight Guy Croft.
As lifelong Swansea City fans, they have expressed their desire to fight for a title at the Swansea.com Stadium.
The show on December 7 is promoted by Jamie Conlan and Neil Power Promotions.
Ioan Croft posted on his Facebook page:
"There will be a Midway Motors Bus going from Crymych to Waterford (ferry included).
"Departs Friday 6 and returns on Sunday 8.
"Limited tickets & seats left.
"Message us to book yours."
