A beloved Newport angler was surprised by some of her colleagues on her retirement from coaching.

Nica Prichard MBE, a well-known figure in Newport's fishing community, was visited at home by fellow members of the Pembrokeshire Federation of Angling Coaches (PFAC).

The pensioner, who is well into her 80s, has been a lifelong angler and was a founding member of the PFAC, an organisation she helped establish in 2009 to promote angling to people of all ages and abilities.

Mrs Prichard, who has represented Wales as part of the Welsh Ladies Angling Division, decided to cut back on her coaching commitments, prompting her colleagues to celebrate her significant contribution to the sport.

Her achievements include introducing hundreds of children and adults to angling and leading the Welsh Ladies fly fishing team to a gold medal victory at the age of 80.

During the visit, her colleagues shared stories and presented her with a 'Leaping Salmon' rose, a nod to her many years spent by the water.

Ms Prichard, who is closely involved with the Nevern Angling Club and Newport Boat Club, was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her services to angling and the environment.

A spokesperson for the PFAC said: "Thank you, Nica, for all you have done for the angling community, and beyond."

Ms Prichard's legacy spans generations, with many in Pembrokeshire having been introduced to the sport under her guidance.
