Hopes are high for the NSA Wales & Border Main Ram Sale after a record clearance at the NSA's early sale.

Chairman Geoff Probert says he’s confident that, with an entry of 3,300 top quality sheep from across the UK, the scene is set for a vibrant sale at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells on Monday 23rd September.

His optimism is built on a hugely successful NSA Wales & Border Early Sale that saw record clearance and a solid stream of high prices and averages.

He adds: “Vendors and buyers were very happy with the Early Sale. The interest with the sale being held at its new location of Brecon Auction Market for the first time helped to add to a real buzz around the sale.

“So everyone is now looking forward to the Main Sale at Builth. Fat lamb prices are firm and cull ewe prices are trade buoyant. The sheep trade is really good at the moment, so we’re looking forward to a great sale and wide choice of quality sheep.”

Geoff, who farms in Worcestershire, had the highest price Charollais at last year’s Main Sale, a shearling ram that sold for 4,000 guineas. The event headlined a turnover above £2million and a top price of 24,000 guineas for a Texel shearling from the Reed family in Haverfordwest.

The high prices were underpinned by strong averages across the board, almost 9% up on the previous year, with 90% of the rams forward sold.

Rams for this year’s sale will come from as far as Scotland, the Isle of Man and Cornwall. Consigners include long standing supporters as well as newcomers and all sheep are subject to rigorous examination before sale.

The sale committee is delighted to celebrate another measure of excellence for the sale. One of the vets on duty has been awarded the RWAS Dr Emrys Evans Award for going above and beyond in his veterinary work. Tom Searle is part of a team of vets at South Wales Farm Vets.

The NSA Wales & Border Ram Sales is pleased to confirm support for two health charities: Farmers Fit and Brecon Support Group for Prostate Cymru. There is also a growing list of sponsors happy to commit to the success of the sale.
