The Madhatters Walk for Parkinson's is set to take place in Llandysul next weekend.

The fundraising initiative on July 14 is encouraging participants to wear a mad or silly hat.

Organised in aid of Parkinson’s UK Cymru and the Newcastle Emlyn and Tivyside Parkinson's Support Group, the proceeds from the event will help fund crucial research into Parkinson's disease and support local initiatives for those living with the condition.

Parkinson's being the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world, affects around 8,300 people in Wales.

It is reported that every hour, two more people are diagnosed with Parkinson's.

The disease can manifest in more than 40 symptoms, from tremors and pain to anxiety.

The special event is being organised by Marco Rebora in Llandeilo.

Mr Rebora lives with Parkinson's and finds that walking has made a big difference to his well-being.

He offers three different routes, varying from approximately 30 minutes to four hours in duration, and welcomes walkers of all paces.

Mr Rebora said: "I’m delighted to organise the first Madhatters Walk for Parkinson’s in Llandysul and can’t wait to get the community together to have fun whilst fundraising for a very special cause.

"All donations will go towards funding important research into the condition which has the potential to lead to better treatments and towards local activities for those living with the condition."

Keri McKie, Wales community fundraiser at Parkinson’s UK Cymru, said: "We’ve made huge breakthroughs in the last 50 years, but there is still no cure for Parkinson’s and current treatments are not good enough.

"We’re therefore incredibly grateful that Marco has organised this walk with the funds going to support vital research and community initiatives.

"Without the generosity of people like Marco, our work would not be possible and hopefully the walk will inspire others to get involved and support Parkinson’s UK.

“Walk for Parkinson’s is Parkinson’s UK’s annual fundraising series, and this year the charity is hosting a series of walks taking in 15 locations across the UK between June and October.

“If you’re unable to make it to one of the events near you, you can organise your own Walk, just like Marco.”

Participants must register on the website by July 10 and raise the minimum sponsorship amount of £20.

All walks will start and finish at Y Porth Hotel in Llandysul and participants will receive a medal.

There will also be a trophy for the person who wore the ‘maddest’ hat during their walk.
