A Ceredigion business was crowned national champions at the House of Lords for their ‘vision to provide sustainable farming.’

Bargoed Farm was given the rural enterprise award at the annual Countryside Alliance Awards.

The final awards ceremony took place on Tuesday (June 25) and was sponsored by the Earl of Leicester.

The esteemed judging panel on Bargoed Farm said: “The Thomas family are a force of nature with a vision to provide sustainable farming and tourism while supporting their local community.

“With the renewable energy to keep diversifying, there is nothing this couple can’t or won’t do to drive this rural enterprise forward.”

The Countryside Alliance awards also recognised businesses across four other categories such as best pub, best village shop, best butcher and best for local food and drink.

It aims to recognize businesses who go the extra mile within their communities by supporting the local economy and championing local goods and services.

Two other Welsh businesses won awards as Cwm Farm Charcuterie in Glamorgan was commended in local food and drink category while Izzy’s Butchers in Powys received the Clarissa Dickson Wright Award.

The Clarissa Dickson award focuses on her belief in campaigning, educating and supporting local farmers and producers.

Nominations for the awards were taken from across the country before being whittled down via a public vote and respective award ceremonies occurred in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Director of Policy for the Countryside Alliance, Sarah Lee said: “This important ceremony was about celebrating the hard work of all those behind rural businesses who are so obviously passionate about providing quality goods, services, and employment in our precious countryside.

“At the regional – and now the national – level, the Countryside Alliance is proud to be honouring these businesses and the individuals behind them, who rose to the top amongst the countless other worthy businesses nominated.”
