A Ceredigion woman has been rewarded for her dedication to ensuring women enjoy sailing.
Hannah Schafer, an instructor at Cardigan Bay Watersports, has been given an RYA Cymru Wales Impact Award for empowering women to take up sailing.
Ms Schafer was nominated for the award by multiple members of the Women’s Only sailing group at the New Quay-based centre.
The weekly sessions began six years ago and have been facilitated by Ms Schafer since the beginning.
The cohort includes beginners, seasoned sailors needing to regain confidence, and those keen on enhancing their abilities.
In their nomination, members expressed the joy and camaraderie they had experienced whilst developing their sailing skills, attributing their progress to Ms Schafer's kindness, patience and exceptional coaching.
"The award was a complete surprise, totally out of the blue!" the 60-year-old said.
She conveyed her understanding of the significance of a women-only group, stating: "It is just a different atmosphere, it's not competitive and everyone is supportive of each other.
"It’s fun and everyone can go at their own pace with no pressure.
"Everyone can just be themselves."
Ms Schafer, who learned to sail about 20 years ago, empathises with those desiring to venture into the sport later in life, but intimidated by the prospect.
Besides her role at Cardigan Bay, she spends her spare time volunteering at Teifi Boating Club to encourage people of all ages to experience the joy of sailing.
She said: "I just love helping people to be out on the water.
"Getting afloat builds your confidence and gives you a break from daily life and a different perspective.
"And in our women’s group it has a wider impact on people’s lives beyond the two hours each week that they spend here."
One of those nominating her for the award, group member Roma Kearns said: "Hannah is so calm but clear and believes in us when we doubt ourselves.
"She imparts confidence and has a very positive way of teaching where I have never felt anything but to keep trying.
"No matter the weather, she is always smiling.
"Not just any instructor, she gives her heart and soul to a committed small group of women."
Tamara Petty, another member, added: "Hannah has helped me turn a dream of sailing into a reality."
Ms Schafer's efforts have enabled many women to transition from nervous beginners to confident sailors, participating in regattas and fostering a long-term passion for the sport.
The RYA Impact Awards embody the sport's governing body's five-year strategy, acknowledging those who make substantial contributions to activities on the waters of Wales.
