A CEREDIGION resident has gained work in a number of schools after gaining qualifications through a local work pathway.
Batool Raza was a lecturer in art and design in Pakistan and hoped to use these skills, and her knowledge and experience to continue teaching in Wales.
However, the mother-of-two would not be able to do so because she did not have the relevant UK teaching qualifications or work experience and so her dreams were hampered.
As she was the main carer for her children, she found herself unable to financially fund a teaching course but after getting involved in Ceredigion County Council’s workways+ service, she was able to get her foot in the door.
The service – which helps people into work through one-to-one mentoring, funded training and introduction to employers – assigned her an employment mentor called Alison Ellis Jones who would help to develop her employment skills, and Catrin Davies, an employer liaison officer to help get her opportunities to speak to employers.
They helped her identify a two-year PGCE teaching training course and provided the funding needed. She was also given a screen printing course to teach at Dysgu Bro, Adult Community Learning for three hours each week.
Batool has now completed the training course and has a job. She said: “I have been working with New Directions as a supply teacher since I finished my PGCE. I have worked and gained experience from teaching at different schools like Plascrug Primary, Penglais, Henry Richard, Aberaeron Secondary, Borth and St Padarn.
“I have also displayed my artwork at ‘A refugee in Aberystwyth’ exhibition for which I was interviewed by the BBC Art show.
“I am also teaching a silk painting workshop at the art centre.
“Thank you Workways+ for your support and encouragement. I am trying to give all I can back to the community and guide them the best I can.”
Councillor Wyn Thomas, council cabinet member for schools, lifelong learning and skills, said: “Many congratulations to Batool on your fantastic achievement and for pursuing your dreams of teaching art and sharing your skills and talents with our learners. This again is a wonderful example of the support available through Workways+ and we are proud of everything Batool has achieved.”
Workways+ is part funded by European Social Fund through the Welsh Government. To contact your local office, visit www.workways.wales
