Theatr Mwldan Film Society will screen the 2022 film No Bears (rated 12A) on Sunday, March 12 at Cardigan.

The film is the latest work from Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi.

He plays himself as a filmmaker attempting to direct a cast and crew in Turkey.

He is forced to stay in an Iranian village close to the border and comes up against suspicion and local traditions in the village as he watches his actors perform their own stories of attempted escape to Europe.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it won the Special Jury Prize and also won the Award for Cinematic Bravery at the Chicago International Film Festival.

Mr Panahi was sentenced to six years in prison shortly after the completion of the film, however, earlier this month, two days after starting a hunger strike, he was released according to his wife Tahereh Saeedi.

He had been arrested and jailed in July after questioning the Iranian government on the arrests of two fellow filmmakers who had spoken out about the Iranian regime.

The sentence of six years in prison also came with a 20-year ban on filmmaking according to Smithsonian Magazine which was imposed in 2010 after he attended the funeral of a student killed during the Green Movement protests but had never been activated.

Theatr Mwldan Film Society will show No Bears at 6.30pm on Sunday, March 12 at Mwldan. Tickets cost £7.70 or £5.90 with Theatr Mwldan Film Society membership.
