ONE of the many events scheduled before Covid struck was Côr Meibion Clwb Rygbi Aberteifi’s 10th anniversary concert.

The choir will now be almost 13 years of age by the time the long-delayed event finally goes ahead at Rhosygilwen on Saturday, November 19.

MD Rhian Medi claims she agreed originally to conduct in the belief that the idea of a rugby club choir would have ‘fizzled out in a fortnight!’

The idea was conceived in London when club members singing in a hotel having seen Wales beat England at Twickenham were asked if they belonged to a choir.

Keith Leighton decided there and then that Clwb Rugby Aberteifi needed a choir. A very short time later, the idea became a reality.

“Members come from all walks of life - most don't read musis and there is no committee,” said a spokesperson.

“The common denominator is a sense of fun and mischief and a positive attitude towards the Welsh language, rather than great musical talent!”

Over the years the choir have travelled to Brittany, Ireland and Cornwall and performed at many weddings, funerals and family celebrations.

During that time members have passed away, lost family members, moved away, moved back, become grandfathers or got married.

The strangest place in which they have performed was a disused baptistry in St. Dogmaels.

They will be joined at Rhosygilwen by Côr Meibion y Penrhyn, a considerably larger and more experienced outfit from the Bethesda Slate Quarry and surrounding area.

Further fun and entertainment is guaranteed in performances by Elvis Desley, local evergreen baritone Gwyn Morris and young, up-and-coming singer Katy Rees.

The choir have performed at three Elvis conventions at Porthcawl, supporting Elvis Desley when the Cardigan-based tribute act placed first in the competition.

Gwyn Morris has contributed to several of the choir's programmes while Katy represents the many young musicians given the opportunity to perform with them.

All have played a significant part in the history of Côr y Clwb Rygbi.

Tickets are available from the Rhosygilwen website. All proceeds go to Ambiwlans Awyr Cymru.
