CEREDIGION MP Ben Lake met staff and volunteers when he dropped in at Cardigan Foodbank to discuss the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.
The foodbank, which is part of the Trussell Trust, relocated into the old Co-op supermarket building at the bottom of Quay Street back in 2020, and has been taken over as part of the ministries of New Life Church as a community project.
Cardigan Foodbank has seen huge demand for its services in recent months, with 777 vouchers issued between April 1 and August 26.
In the last year the team in Cardigan have provided 1,598 three-day emergency food supplies to local people.
“It was good to catch-up with the hard-working staff and volunteers of Cardigan Foodbank,” said Mr Lake.
“Their compassion and commitment is exemplary, and we are so fortunate in Cardigan, and indeed across Ceredigion, to have so many people ready to give of their time to help provide support to others.
“Unfortunately, rising bills and living costs are causing severe hardship to more and more people, which is reflected in the higher number of referrals to Cardigan Foodbank.
“That we have such a clear need for food banks in one of the world’s wealthiest economies is hardly a cause for celebration, but there can be no doubt that the support offered by the county’s many foodbanks represent the very best aspects of our community.”
