A FORMER primary school teacher from Cardigan has told how she raised over £5,000 for charity by playing piano for 12 hours non-stop!

Glenda Jones marked her 70th birthday by setting out to raise as much money for Cardigan Cancer Care as possible.

Over the course of a day she played an inexhaustible variety of tunes, ranging from pop and hymns to classical.

“You name it and I played it,” she told the Tivy-Side.

As the indefatigable Glenda played on, an army of friends, family and visitors gathered at her Ferwig Road home to provide valuable support.

And eventually at 10pm, having finally reached her 12-hour target, Glenda signed off with an emotional performance of Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau to rapturous applause.

“I lost my twin brother, Glyn, to cancer at the age of 52 and Cardigan Cancer Care were very good to him,” Glenda told the Tivy-Side afterwards.

“As they were a cause so dear to my heart I thought why not raise some money for them instead of receiving presents on my special birthday?

“I set up a Go Fund Me page and donations came in from as far afield as America, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

“My home had a constant stream of well-wishers at all hours – and family and friends provided some lovely food.

“I had some soreness in the shoulders afterwards, but my fingers were fine – I was high on adrenalin for days after and feeling very proud of myself!

“Wait ‘til I’m 80 – I’ll play for 24 hours then!”

Glenda’s final tally came to £5,470.
