THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
by Sue Player, of St Mary's
So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 1 Kings 19:11
When we experience extremes of weather, as we have done this last week, the sense of power in nature can be both exhilarating and, at times, overwhelming. The crashing of waves and the falling of great trees gives us a sense of our own frailty and vulnerability. The Israelites, in the Old Testament, experienced such wonders and asked if God was in the wind or the earthquake.
We too can feel a sense of something beyond ourselves, when we stand in nature and observe the sometimes, terrifying power of the wind and storms. In these extreme moments perhaps, we spare a thought for those who have had their homes destroyed and their livelihoods wiped out by hurricane, earthquake or tsunami.
This sense of perspective reminds us how fortunate we are and that there are often insignificant things that we worry about.
But sometimes big events do overtake our lives; sickness and death, loss of employment and broken relationships. In these moments we may remember God and cry out for his help. We do face difficult times and God never said that this life would be devoid of care.
However, he did promise to be with us in our struggles and to give us strength to face them. Above all he has promised to love us and never leave us if we turn to him. In fact, he sent his son to die upon a cross to prove how much he meant it.. for each one of us, for all time.
