BARCUD housing association has made a £100 donation towards the Aberporth Community Fridge.

"The work of volunteers and supporters at the Community Fridge and these food banks is truly fantastic," said a Barcud spokesperson.

"Our Housing and Cynnal teams are grateful for their support throughout the year."

Launched in October 2021, the project overseen by more than 50 volunteers at Canolfan Dyffryn, is a hive of activity.

Community Fridge co-ordinator Nicola King co-ordinates collections for the Co-op Project at Newcastle Emlyn, Tesco and Aldi, Sara and Meirion in Aberporth, and Dewi James the Butcher in Cardigan, and opens the centre to the public during the week.

The project supports the community to reduce food waste and helps families and individuals in the area with access to free quality food in difficult times.

Already in December, Aberporth Community Fridge has saved 622 kilos of food from going to waste.

There is no requirement to pay for food in the Community Fridge, but sometimes some individuals who support the initiative make a small donation as a thank you.

The project has been described as ‘a lifeline’ for many.

This Christmas, Nicola and her team of volunteers prepared and presented 32 Christmas food hampers.

More than 50 boxes of biscuits were also distributed to elderly people in Aberporth.

Feedback has been heart-warming. "We rely on people in Aberporth to let us know who needs our support,” said Nicola.

“We try to ensure that everyone feels part of the community at a time that can be lonely if you are on your own."

She would also like to thank local businesses and individuals, Aberporth Community Council, St Cynwyls Church and the village primary school for all their hard work in bringing the project together.

Kate Curran, finance and IT group director at Barcud, said: "The ingenuity and commitment of their volunteers is fantastic.

“We are delighted to be able to support them to continue the excellent service they provide.”

The Aberporth donation was among 13 made by Barcud to community fridge and food banks across Ceredigion and Powys to help over the festive period.
