LARGE vehicles are getting stuck in the narrow lane from the Strand to Gloster Row near to two ongoing work projects, Cardigan town councillors have been told.

Welsh Water are working on a new emergency/relief pumping station on The Strand, while Natural Resources Wales are engaged in a tidal flood scheme – a wall running from Cardigan Bridge as far as the old hospital site.

However, Clllr Yvonne O’Neill told colleagues that some drivers were paying the price for ignoring a diversion sign by the Bathroom Centre.

Instead of continuing across Cardigan Bridge or up through town, they were becoming stuck in the narrow lane built during the days of the horse and cart.

“Any local will tell you that nobody can get down that lane in anything bigger than a family car,” said Cllr O’Neill.

“I have written to Ceredigion County Council explaining that vehicles are getting stuck and suggesting that they put a sign there saying that lane is unsuitable for long vehicles.

“Children use that route on their way to school and it’s quite dangerous having vehicles going down there.

“It’s normally a safe route to school.”

Cllr Catrin Miles said the issue of vehicles getting stuck had been going on for years.

“As the local member I do not know if I can get more signs down there,” she added.

Cllr O’Neill suggested the diversion sign be removed as it appeared to be worsening the situation.

“That sign is actually sending traffic down there,” she said. “We need something sending vehicles further along the road or one stating ‘no access’"

However, Cllr John Adams-Lewis felt it advisable to warn motorists that the lane could not be negotiated in long or even medium-length vehicles.

“We should re-affirm that the diversion sign should be re-worded or removed,” said Cllr Trystan Phillips.

NRW project is a Tidal Flood Scheme – a wall running from Cardigan Bridge along as far as the old hospital site.  What with the 2 projects, should make a huge difference to problems down there.
