Newcastle Emlyn ladies' hockey team firsts were in free-scoring mood as they hit a magnificent seven goals to beat Gwent Thirds at Crymych Leisure Centre.
Mel Williams and Sara Patterson both scored twice, with Enfys Davies, Sioned Davies and Beca Lewis also getting on the scoresheet to complete a convincing win.
Currently sitting second in the South Wales league division two, and with a game in hand on the leaders, Emlyn were hoping to continue their positive start to the season.
Starting at a quick pace, Enfys Davies and Sioned Davies made a break down the right, and after a few changes in possession, Emlyn were awarded a penalty corner, but failed to capitalise.
Another penalty corner, however, was successful as experienced midfielder Mel Williams opened the scoring, and this was followed by a period of sustained pressure by Emlyn.
Forwards Sioned Davies and Sara Patterson were fed by talented midfielders Rosie Hughes and Ffion Davies and before the half time whistle, another two penalty corners were awarded.
Enfys Davies and Mel Williams both capitalised to make it 3-0 - and in the second half, Emlyn’s strong replacements Soffia Cynnwyl, Gwawr Evans, Beca Lewis and Elen Hill maintained the pace.
Meanwhile Emlyn’s defence of Ellie Lloyd, Ffion Davies and Caryl-Haf Lloyd stayed strong, with goalie Angharad Jenkins only having to make a couple of saves throughout the 70 minutes.
Player of the match Sioned Davies up front made an impressive run right into the D, beating several defenders to hit a fast ball straight past the Gwent keeper for 4-0.
This was followed by yet another penalty corner against Gwent, finished off by Sara Patterson, who has re-joined the Emlyn team after a stint with Cardiff and Met.
Beca Lewis and Sara Patterson added another two goals to the scoresheet before the final whistle, slipping some loose balls past the keeper to seal an impressive 7-0 win.
