AFTER seven games Lampeter Town hold a slender lead at the top of the Costcutter Ceredigion League from Llanboidy in second, with the top two banking points against Ffostrasol and New Quay respectively.
Town have been a revelation under new manager Mark Saunders, but the high-flyers had to pull out all the stops before springing a 2-1 win over visiting full-of-fight Ffostrasol at North Road.
Ffostrasol are also under new management this term in the form of Dafydd Evans and the young Wanderers showed against the leaders they will be a force to reckon with in the months ahead.
After a goalless opening 45 minutes the league pacesetters went ahead early in the second period when midfielder Carwyn Gregson volleyed into the roof of the net.
To their credit the young visitors refused to throw in the towel and deservedly drew level through striker Ollie Edwards, but in the 73rd minute Saudners’ men clinched the three points when leading marksman Jason Jones finished clinically.
Llanboidy had very few problems in romping to a 6-0 win over bottom of the pile New Quay at Parc Arthur, a win that kept the west Carmarthenshire side on the heels of the leaders.
Promoted as division two champions the last time competitive football was held locally, New Quay have now lost six on the trot and although these are very early days it is already clear that they will have to show considerable improvement to avoid a quick return to the second division.
Tomos Rogers was the goal-scoring hero for the visitors with a hat-trick, and Celt Thomas-Jones, Gethin Scourfield and Dafydd Vaughan also netted goals.
Llandysul recovered from a poor run to earn a point in a thrilling 4-4 draw against Felinfach at Llandyisul Park.
Striker Joshua Martin was dangerous up front for the Teifisiders and his efforts brought him a hat-trick, with a visiting defender putting through his own goal.
Paul James and Joe Jenkins bagged a brace of goals apiece for the Milkmen.
League new boys Llechryd appear to be running away with the division two championship after six straight wins that have seen the Teifi Valley villagers race clear at the top of the table.
As the leaders swamped Maesglas under an eight goal avalanche Liam James led the goalscoring with a hat-trick and the other goals came via Ben Davies, Jac Blackford, Owen Wilton, Justin Noble and Daniel Jones.
The other second division newcomers Pencader United left their dismal early form behind when notching their first win in a 9-0 romp against visitors Aberporth.
Sebastian Davies-Wigley stole the limelight in netting four times and scoriing were Joe Rossetti, Rhodri Rees, Alfie Morgan, Aaron Reed and Connor Thomas.
In division three, goals from Mark Davies and Wayne Jones earned Felinfach Reserves a 2-1 home win over Newcastle Emlyn Reserves, who scored their goal through Owen Johnson.
