AMBITIOUS plans to celebrate Cardigan’s strong maritime heritage are being drawn up for 2019.

Next year marks the bi-centenary of the Albion sailing from the town with 27 families, many of which were farmers from Cardigan, to New Brunswick, Canada as the first Welsh settlers in Canada.

The society is hoping to run a number of events around the Easter period, 2019, and is looking for support and ideas for this event. So far some of the ideas include:

  • A two-mast ship, the Keewaydin, moored at the Teifi Wharf over the Easter period

  • Tours for visitors from New Brunswick to see homes/area from where their ancestors came

  • Trips in local boats to see both embarkation quays and out to the Bar

  • Demonstration of coracle fishing

  • Exhibition in the warehouse on Teifi Wharf, relevant to 1819

  • Traditional Welsh dance/choirs on Prince Charles Quay

  • Son et Lumiere on the nearby buildings

Cymdeithas Aberteifi Society was formed in 2016 to encourage pride in Cardigan and the surrounding area through its heritage, history, natural history and architecture.

The society acts as the town's Civic Trust and also promotes high standards in planning and architecture, and aims to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in or affecting the area.

After its week-long exhibition in February at the Guildhall, the society is also continuing with some of the projects exhibited, such as the Medieval 3D mapping of Cardigan and the Pilgrims Way leaflet from Mwnt to Cardigan.
