PASSENGERS and politicians have been shocked by news that a large section of the Ceredigion bus network is to be scrapped.

Arriva announced last week that it was to close its depot in Aberystwyth and stations in New Quay, Lampeter and Dolgellau on December 21 following consultation with staff.

The move could result in 46 job losses, and would mean the cancellation of several buses.

Arriva Buses Wales public transport funding and spiralling fuel costs had put pressure on the service.

A company statement said: “A recent network review has led us to believe that current services in this area cannot, despite our best efforts, continue.”

Following Tuesday’s shock announcement, local AM Elin Jones took up the issue with the Welsh Transport Minister and Ceredigion County Council.

She said: “It’s imperative that everyone works together quickly to make sure that passengers in Ceredigion aren’t left in the lurch. I’ve been impressed so far at the resolve of the Minister, the County Council and local operators to find solutions to the problem.

“I’m aware of operators such as Richards Brothers, Mid Wales Travel, Lloyds, Bryan’s Coaches and others who are interested in taking over a number of former Arriva routes. These include the services from Cardigan along the coast towards Synod Inn and Aberaeron, and the routes through Lampeter to Carmarthen and Aberystwyth. These routes are a lifeline for south Ceredigion.”

She added: “It’s imperative for so many people in a county such as Ceredigion to have a reliable bus service. I’ve been contacted by a wide range of people – from students to pensioners and everyone in between. It’s crucial too for our tourist industry.”

Ceredigion MP Mark Williams said he was appalled by the cutbacks.

He said: “While there have been rumours for some time, this is indeed a shock decision with no interim arrangements in place. These services are crucial for the local community.

“People really do rely on these services, and Arriva have left us well and truly in the lurch. People need to get to work; they need to visit family and friends; not everyone drives a car or can afford one.”

William Powell, AM for Mid and West Wales, said hundreds of people depend on the services every week.

He said: “I am appalled by Arriva’s decision to withdraw these essential bus routes in Ceredigion.

“I have received a number of petitions from local residents regarding the need to improve transport links between Aberystwyth and South Wales and it is vital that their views are taken into account as this process continues.”
