LOCAL youngsters will have an opportunity to learn about fire-fighting skills this month.

Ceredigion Command Community Safety Department is introducing a 20 week Young Cadet Scheme.

The scheme, aimed at 13-15 year-olds, will be held at various Ceredigion locations, including Cardigan on October 10, and Aberaeron on October 8.

A total of 46 young applicants from a number of local secondary schools are taking part in the scheme and will have the opportunity to work towards an Edexcel BTEC Level 2 in Fire & Rescue Service in the Community (QCF).

The course will consist of practical and theoretical activities on the drill ground and in the classroom.

Scheme Co-ordinator Temporary Watch Manager Dylan Evans said: “The applicants will get the opportunity to learn about everything from the history and responsibility of the Fire Service to equality and diversity and improving their communication skills. They will also have the chance to get involved in numerous physical activities including hose running, ladder drills, manual handling and much more.”

Young people who complete the course will be invited to an awards ceremony , where they will get the chance to demonstrate their newly acquired skills in front of family, friends, Fire Service personnel and local councillors.
