POLICE on mobile patrol at the hospital roundabout in Cardigan during the early hours of the morning checked the registration number of a Volvo V40 and decided they wanted to speak to the motorist in relation to his driving documents.

But when officers followed the car it sped away and continued for nearly three miles along the A484 road to Llechryd where the 39-year-old driver Carwyn Jones drove down a lane to his home at Hafod Lwyd, got out of the vehicle and ran into the house, leaving the front door open.

Unfortunately for Jones the boys in blue were still on his tail, knocked on the door and entered the house where Jones gave a positive breath test.

Crown prosecutor Jackie Lis related this story at Ceredigion Magistrates Court when Jones, who was not legally represented, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess alcohol, the offence committed on July 31.

Asked by court clerk Diane Williams if he had anything to say about the incident Jones said “I made a bad decision in driving home and wish to apologise.”

He was fined £240 with £85 costs and £24 victim surcharge and disqualified from driving for 17 months.
