NEW and striking work by St.Dogmaels batik artist Wendy Evans recently showed in the High Street window of Jackie’s Hair stylists in Cardigan. The detailed and colourful view of the town’s historic Guildhall as seen from Priory Street entitled: ‘Summer in Cardigan / Haf yn Aberteifi’ celebrates this lively scene on a splendid summer’s day.
Hairdresser and business woman Jackie Edwards, an enthusiastic supporter of local talent, was pleased to have Wendy’s work displayed in her shop window and enjoyed hearing all the wonderful comments from passers-by; Jackie said: ‘Both locals and visitors alike loved the pictures and they drew such a lot of attention to my window. People were really curious about the batik method; a technique which uses hot liquid wax-resist and dyes on cotton cloth.’
Wendy and Jackie took this opportunity to raise money for a local charity donating some of the money from sales to ‘Cardigan Cancer Care’. On receiving the cheque for £100 on behalf of the charity, their treasurer Angela Evans said: ‘We are delighted to be associated with this talented local artist, and we are very grateful to both Wendy and Jackie for their innovative fund raising event. It just goes to show how money can be raised for charity in many different ways and we are constantly overwhelmed with the generosity of so many individuals and groups in the community. We have been supporting Cancer patients and their families for almost 25 years purely from fund raising and donations, and hope to continue to do so for many years to come.’
