Abercych is gearing up for a weekend of dance, film and discussion as an innovative festival comes to the village later this month.
The Maynard 3: Family Dances festival, which runs from Friday May 15 to Saturday May 16, event features workshops, performance, films and presentations. It aims to explore how artists engage with communities and people across the generations in making art, and specifically dance.
Organised by dance artists Simon Whitehead, Siriol Joyner and Stirling Steward, with Rhowan Alleyne, the intention of the festival is to establish a long term participatory dance project with people from the lower Teifi Valley.
This is the third consecutive year that the festival has taken place in Abercych.
The festival opens on Friday, May 15, with a film screening in Abercych Village Hall of Alex Reuben's Routes: Dancing to New Orleans. This road movie journeys through the dance and music of the American Deep South in a vivid stream of sound and vision. There will be a Q&A with the director afterwards.
Other films that will feature in the festival include Haircuts for Children by Mammalian Diving Reflex, Run Like a Horse by Simon Whitehead and Street Dance by Lone Twin.
On Saturday morning, Siriol Joyner and Stirling Steward are leading a workshop open to local families and individuals of all ages. This will be a space to explore through dancing, drawing, experimenting with objects, building dens and spaces that we can move within. Participants should bring an object that they are happy to share with the group.
After the workshop, Siriol will be joined by Elspeth Owen who will talk about her project ON the OFF-CHANCE
After lunch there will be a performance of Gwrando tu Hwnt i Wrando / Listening Beyond the Listening' by Cai Tomos a piece inspired by Buddug Jones' experience of light and listening, both in moving around in the world, and in her life, as her sight deteriorated.
Also on Saturday Jane Mason will give a presentation on her recent project A Dance at Home. While at 2 Penrhiw, Abercych there will be an installation of Under Dark Skies by Joanna Young.
In the evening, there will be a Twmpath in the hall with the very popular The Gower Allstars and Julie Murphy and a cafe by Jade Mellor of Wild Pickings.
