Film fans in Fishguard will soon be able to see the latest releases as Theatr Gwaun is set to install digital projection equipment.

The new equipment will enable the community venue to show the latest releases, an increased range of specialist films, and tap into other innovations such as live screenings of major events.

The announcement comes after the venue received generous capital grants from the Arts Council of Wales and the European funded Collaborative Communities project, plus extensive fundraising by volunteers,

Chairman of Theatr Gwaun Community Trust, Richard Goswell said: “This is a great day for us. It has become increasingly difficult to get films on 35mm, so much so that we have been without any film showings in recent weeks. With digital projection equipment, we can show just what our loyal audience has told us it wants – the latest films close to release, as well as the specialist and independent screenings that make Theatr Gwaun unique.

He added: “We will still keep our vintage 35mm projector. We are proud of the heritage of Theatr Gwaun as an independent high street cinema, one of very few left in the country, and we hope to be able to organise specialised screenings. But digital isn’t just the future, it’s the now. We have to compete with streaming services and the internet, and we know our community wants to see the big films when they come out. And now, thanks to the generosity of the Arts Council of Wales and Collaborative Communities, movie-goers in North Pembrokeshire can do just that, in the friendliest cinema around, and right on their doorstep!”

There is no definite launch date for the new equipment, but Theatr Gwaun has committed to work as quickly as possible, and to keep audiences updated.
